. hello, again, top of the hour. already a warm and humid day and week's start. and last night's weather left a lot of debris on your drive. sharon will have more on that in a moment. first meteorologist tim williams in for marty bass in the first warning weather senter. >> good morning, everyone. first warning -- weather center. >> good morning, everyone. first warning doppler radar. storms moving through the area, and a humid day yesterday and thunderstorms broke out in many parts of the area, baltimore county, to carroll county, now a front that moved through that brought us those storms, the same showers lingering. cambridge down salisbury. ocean city now starting to see some light showers after seeing storms earlier this morning. but, again, that is moving on through.

we stand a chance of seeing more of those showers. here is your forecast for this day. temperatures starting off just around 70 degrees en route for a daytime high of 88 with overnight lows back down to 70 and a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. the complete updated first warning forecast coming up in just a moment. a lot going nontraffic this morning too. sharon with wjz -- going on in traffic this morning. sharon with wjz traffic control. >> first we want to update you with that serious accident in notingham. white marsh is shut down between honeygo and the beltway. watch out for that, the inner loop of the beltway is the alternate. 70 eastbound at 32. debris still there at kranbrook at york road. you are also looking at a downed tree in reisterstown. nicodemus. another downed tree cloned between frederick. and reisterstown. traffic lights also out in sykesville, route 26 at oakland mills and stevenson. downed wires on park heights avenue blocking all lanes

a tree on a car and a window smashed out. along church road, some sort of debris or tree down and definitely power lines as well. >> it's just crazy. how did all this destruction come from one little storm? >> reporter: that is the question on the minds of residents all across this state. a powerful storm system blew into the area dumping blinding amounts of rain in some areas and causing unbelievable damage in others. >> the weather, so many snapped, downed trees. >> we all front that basement, stayed there for about a minute or two and realized it had passed by. >> the storm packed more than rain and high winds. in some areas hail was also reported. a i cross carroll and baltimore county, decades old trees were brought down in minutes taking down power lines leaving some to question if more than just rain touched down. >> within the darkness, i saw from the corner of my eye a really -- a dark, swirling mass. like that funnel cloud. and she was like, maybe we should get away from the door.

>> and even though there is a lot of intense damage in this very neighborhood, no one was injured. power has been knocked out. when we first rolled up about 5 a.m., it was obviously pitch black. now that the light of day is going to help people be able to clean up a little bit but they still want bge to get out here and repair those downed power lines. don, back to you. >> thank you, mary. right now more than 15,000 people across the state are without electricity. the greatest number of out ages in baltimore county where over 10,000 still do not have electricity. at the height of the storm more than 40,000 bge customers lost power. stay with wjz eyewitness news, when severe threatening wjz is is always on for your own live look at doppler weather radar and the list of forecasts along a list of outages in the area go to wjz.com. a 2-year-old girl is among the dozen people recovering this morning from a shooting in east path. it happened along the 2600 block of ashland avenue where police say shots were fired during a party and hit 12

different people including a little girl. she was shot in the arm. a pregnant woman was wounded in the leg. everyone is expected to recover. police have not said if any -- if they have any suspects at this time. a baltimore county -- eastern baltimore county apartment complex is once again cleaning up for -- after a serious carbon monoxide leak. three people at the cove village apartment complex in essex got sick over the weekend and had to be hospitalized. investigators believe a malfunctioning gas stove may to be blame. over the last month, a number carbon monoxide leaks have been reported that the very same conference. it is official now, sarah palin has stepped down as governor of alaska. as hari sreenivasan reports for wjz, some have wondering what is next for the former vice presidential candidate. >> reporter: sarah palin is moving on. >> i will be able to fight even harder for you for what is right and for truth. >> reporter: first-term governor left office 16 months early. she felt the lawsuits and

ethics probes against her was a distraction to the office and she wanted to focus on her family. >> i feel it is my duty to avoid the unproductive, typical politics as usual lame-duck session in one's last year in office. >> reporter: politics was anything but usual with palin. her popularity soared when she became john mccain's running mate. after missteps she became fodder for light-night comedy shows. >> our new governor has a very nice family too, so leave his kids alone. >> reporter: her departure may open up a run for the presidency in 2012, but with her approval rating hovering at 40%, fellow republicans are confused with her choice to leave the governorship. >> reporter: palin plans to write a book, campaign for other candidates and pay off her large legal bills. democrats are staying quiet to

see what she does next. >> she is entering private life now and we wish her well and up to her to decide what role to play in the future. she has plenty of advice i am sure. she doesn't need mine. >> reporter: conservatives are sure she will be back. >> i sean parnell. >> reporter: sean parnell is now the 12th governor of the state of alaska. hari sreenivasan, wjz eyewitness news. >> now the president and secretary of state will meet with top chinese officials late they are morning in washington. the first of two days of high- level talks between the two nations. analysts say leaders will discuss everything from trade to foreign policy. recently the secretary of state praised china encouraging north korea to abandon their nuclear program. turning to sports, the orioles will come back to camden yards avoiding a sweep in boston. strong defense and pitching provided the sparks as the orioles took on the red sox at fenway park. a game you saw here on wjz 13. starting pitcher david hernandez allowed one run in seven innings of work. the orioles will go continue to win the game 6-2. the birds

6:14. meteorologist tim williams in for marty bass in the first warning weather center. >> well, don, we are looking at a pretty moist, pretty humid morning. typically when we talk about

the very humid feel of summer, we talk about dew points in the 60s, the mid 60s. a dew point around 69. just around 70 a minute or so ago. this update has take ton down a notch. relative humidity at 90%. winds coming in from the southeast at 6 miles per hour. 29.91 and rise something your barometer reading. around the metro area, temperatures -- 64 in cumberland. 60 in oakland. 75 in ocean city. around the metro areas as i was mentioning, 72 in columbia. 73 in annapolis. 72 on kent island and 68 in bel air. the winds have shifted a little bit, but we have a bit of a southerly component will begin to funnel in that warm, humid air throughout the afternoon. because of that and a front that pushed through that really started to trigger some storms yesterday that have now just settled just to the east of the area, we are going to see the potential for some thunderstorms. the dynamic between those two air masses, the cooler air with the front. the warm, humid air coming in from the south and southeast or

southwest as it will be likely later in the day. we are going to see that dynamic kind of cook a little bit, sort of stir in the afternoon during the heat of the day. we will keep that chance throughout week. the front moves on out of here and get a bit of a transition tomorrow slightly less risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon and another front will bring us the chances right on throughout end of the week. we keep the same forecast in place until about friday. sunset at 8:23. south wind on the bay 10 to 15 knots with a small-craft advisory in effect. the next high tide at fort mchenry 11:19. looking at temperatures getting up to 88 degrees. partly sunny and warm and humid with a thunderstorm potentially in the afternoon. 70 degrees tonight. then partly cloudy and humid in the overnight hours. tomorrow, clouds and sun, hot and humid, 90 degrees. thunderstorms in the afternoon. don. >> thank you. what awaits you on the way to work? sharon with wjz traffic control. >> hi, don. well, another serious accident just coming into us.

. well, after a daytime high of 88 degrees and a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, the next five days look like this. going up to 90 degrees for tuesday and wednesday. again a chance of thunderstorms each afternoon. 88 and 86 and 86 on thursday and friday. can't rule out a chance of thunderstorms on saturday, but the chances are a little less. 70 degrees your overnight low for the next five days, don. >> thank you. everybody has the capacity to save a life and more and more people are getting that message. here is jessica kartalija with a preview what is coming up tonight on eyewitness news? >> reporter: good morning, i am jessica kartalija here at john hopkins hospital where doctors and nurses save lives every day, but one angel proves you don't have to have a fancy title to save a life. robert iams, a painter at john hopkins hospital, never expected his lifeline would come from the vice president of human resources. pamela polk. but it did. pamela took a genuine interest in robert's health when he returned from medical leave. >> i was -- i said how great to have you back.

hello, again. it is 5:30. and it is already a warm and humid day start. you look at the sky conditions rit now, but you are not going to talk about the weather today without talking about the weather last night and its effect on traffic this morning. sharon will have the latest on that after meteorologist tim williams and marty bass over with first warning weather. >> a lot of people are talking about the storms and others are saying what storms are you talking about. we had storms roll through here affecting much of carroll, baltimore county and the eastern shore. we have lingering storms now that we watched move across at area. the dew points are very high. the moisture in the atmosphere is very high and very humid and the temperatures going to contribute to that dynamic later in the day as we get up close to 90 degrees. right now just around cambridge, near salisbury and

the last area cease the showers and they could fire up later in the day. temperatures around 70 degrees and daytime high around 88 with overnight lows back around 70, the complete first warning weather forecast with thunderstorms in the forecast this afternoon coming up in just a few moments, don. >> thank you. expect so ebranches down on your way to work. sharon with wjz traffic control. >> thanks, don. two other problems, two serious accidents. the latest one in the city possibly involving a police vehicle in north lakewood at east fayette. closed between milton and lakewood. watch for an 8-block closure there. a wreck in notingham blocking all eastbound lanes of white marsh boulevard. that is going to be between honeygo boulevard and white marsh boulevard. and then honey go is blocked between white marsh boulevard and campbell boulevard. a traffic light out in fallston. shawan at falls. lights out in west pa tone i can't. west padonia -- padonia.

road. a lot of damage here. a tree down on a car that smashed out the back window and various trees snapped in half on lawns. you can see how that tree -- really one of those branches snapped off and the tree below it snapped. one of those twisted trees. it came crashing down at some point during the storm. >> it is just crazy. how did all this destruction come from one little storm. >> reporter: that is the question on the minds of residents all across the state. a powerful storm system blew into the area dumping blinding amounts of rain in some areas and causing unbelievable damage in others. >> the weather with so many snaps, downed trees >> we all ran into the basement and stayed there for a about a minute to two and realized that it passed by. >> reporter: the storm packed more than rain and high winds. in some areas hail was reported. across carroll and baltimore county, decades-old trees were brought down in minutes in some

cases bring down power lines leaving more to question if it was rain that just touched down. >> in the darkness i saw from the corner of my eye, ar dark swirling mass, like a funnel cloud and she said maybe we should get away from the door. >> reporter: with even all this damage around, this area, no injuries reported. there are lots of power lines that are down. bge obviously has power off in this area or it was knocked out. crews will head this way throughout the day but it will take some time before power is restored in this area off church road. back to you. >> thank you, mary. i have the numbers on the power outages. 15,000 bge customers across maryland are without electricity at this hour, the greater number of out ages in bath county where mary is where over 10,000 homes are without it. at the height of the storm 40,000 customers lost electricity. remember wjz is always on. for updated weather conditions, your own live look at doppler weather radar and a list of power outages in your area. simply go to wjz.com.

an overnight accident in the city claims the clive of a cabdriver on northern parkway. cabbie was attempting to make a u-turn when it was hit by another vehicle. the impact killed the cab's driver and sent several occupants of the second car to the hospital. police are investigating who is to blame. city police are searching for the gunman who open fired wounding a dozen people in east baltimore overnight, the group was attending a cookout along the 2600 block of ashland avenue. a 2-year-old girl and a pregnant woman were among those caught in the crossfire. none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening at this hour. police are not saying a suspect or a motive at this hour. another attack on a popular bike trail have police in anne arundel county on alert. as jessica kartalija reports, they have a small message for anyone who uses the b & a trail. >> reporter: a popular place for hiking and biking turns into a crime scene again friday night when to people walking the b & a trail are attacked.

>> they said they were approached from behind by that subject. he demanded money and valuables, they refused to give him anything. >> the suspect struck the male victim in the face and headed off on foot heading south on the trail to whites road in severna park. >> a black male in his teens, 5'6", 5'7" wearing a black shirt and black hat turned backwards. >> reporter: this latest attack comes months after another robbery on the same trail, this time near glen burnie. >> the next thing i know, i look out my window, and the fire department is here, the police are here, and somebody laying on this bench right here. and they took him away in the ambulance. >> reporter: the 20-year-old victim was beaten unconscious and taken to shock trauma for a head injury. police have stepped up patrols in both areas. anne arundel police tell eyewitness news you don't just need to be concerned on the b & a trail, but really any wooded area like this. >> well lighted areas are always the choice and just to

remind people that the trail is a park and the county parks close at sundown. >> reporter: jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> we remind you, joggers and bikers are not to use the trail alone or after dark. a local judge will not stop the archdiocese of baltimore from closing a high school in baltimore county. parents of students at towson catholic were seeking an injunction to keep the school open. the archdiocese is now asking the circuit court to dismiss their entire lawsuit all together. of weeks ago parents were told towson catholic would not reopen due to rising debt and falling enrollment. residents travel to baltimore city for the firefighters convention. tim reports that cutbacks in cities make it difficult for attendees to continue an old tradition. ♪ [ music ] [ bagpipes ] >> reporter: from around the

country, nearly 17,000 firefighters converged on the baltimore city convention center, the week-long event, to revisit tradition and technology. >> things are coming out to help our firefighters stay more safe. >> reporter: just like in maryland, staying safe despite budget shortfalls. >> cutbacks all over. >> reporter: a challenge for fire companies all around the nation. edward pierce is from new york city. >> we have two used ambulances because we can't afford to buy new. we are in the process of selling our headquarters to move to a different place, move to have a cheaper area to raise some funds to buy new ambulances. [ chanting ] >> reporter: in baltimore, city budget cuts could mean the closure of engine 36 among others. the company has been on edmondson avenue for five decades. >> the fire department. >> reporter: and station 31 in the waverly community needs $2.5 million of renovations. >> we haven't put enough money into them in the past to keep

them modernized. >> reporter: $2 million has to come from federal stimulus money. donations are down. >> if people knew what these officers needed, they would give. >> reporter: 30 years of hosting this expos, they have never battled economic times this tough. and firefighters had to search their individual station budgets just to get here to this event. >> we really didn't see a drop in our attendance. we are very, very pleased. >> reporter: until the economy turns around. >> we will keep doing what we are doing. we have been through worse. we will get through this. >> reporter: firefighters don't plan to miss a beat. from downtown baltimore, tim williams, wjz eyewitness news. >> by the way this year baltimore city's fire department is celebrating its 150th anniversary. turning to sports, two more baseball greats are in the hall of fame. stolen base king rickey henderson is among the newest inductees. during his career, henderson stole 1400 bases. also inducted into cooperstown, former boston slugger jim rice, the only noon lead the majors in triples, homers, and rbis in

we are taking a look out at a pretty bright sky this morning. we thank you all for the pictures of the hail and the wind damage. a few things to clarify. we throw terms around. we see funnel clouds and talk about potential tornadoes. a funnel cloud is not a tornado until it physically touches the ground. the national weather service will be out assessing damage to determine whether or not there were actually tornadoes touching the ground, and the difference in the tornado damage and straight-line winds. keep saying "straight-line winds." tornado damage throws debris all over the place. violently whipping winds. the straight-line winds. everything seems to be directed in one area because straight

line, the direction of the straight line and winds coming down from the clouds. that is what we will look at throughout the day as we progress, and right now the winds are pretty calm but that could change as we move into the afternoon. 72 degrees our temperature. 69 the dew point. relative humidity is pretty high. 90%. the winds from the southeast and 29.91 and rise something the barometer reading with temperatures across the state ranging from about 6 in oakland to 64 in cumberland to 75 in ocean city. around the metro area, 72 in columbia. 72 on kent island, and 68 in bel air. now the winds are coming in from all over the direction, you know, pretty much across the state, but the southeasterly and southwesterly flows what we will be dealing with later in the day and that southerly component is going to help us get up the temperatures very close to 90 degrees and the humidity levels, the dew points are going to stay high and that will be the groundwork for these storms firing up in the afternoon during the heat of the day. we are going to see a front that moves through yesterday, just kind of stall east of the metro area, east of the city,

and because that front is so close, bringing just enough of a ripple in the atmosphere to start to stir the air. well, those storms could start to really heat up as we get into about 4:00, 5:00, and through the evening until we lose the heat of the day. we will keep the chance of thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. today and right on through the week starting to taper off that chance by about saturday or so. so your sunset at 8:23. a small-craft advisory in effect with a south wind on the bay at 10 to 15 knots. 88 degrees today. partly sunny and humid with an afternoon thunderstorm possible. 70 degrees tonight with the same dynamics in place. tomorrow we are looking at 90 degrees. clouds and sun and an afternoon thunderstorm is possible. your five-day forecast is coming up. don. >> thank you. last night's weather is complicating this morning's commute. here is sharon gibala with wjz traffic control. >> plenty other problems complicating it as well, two serious accidents. one of them possibly involving a police car or a police vehicle i should say. that is going to be on north
